The Issue on Gun Control
Firearms are a very controversial topic in the United States. Everybody knows what a gun is, and what it’s used for. Guns had and will serve one purpose and one purpose only: To remove an individual’s life essence from the spiritual realm of life. People have used guns as a sign of dominance in situations of getting what they need in an unethical manner. Regardless if the gun owner has a license, he knows what he is capable of. Due to the problems firearms create, they should be banned.
Firearms can be used wrongfully to gain whatever the possessor wants, and unfortunately divide the races. Police Officers have been seen as criminals in society for killing young African American males. Officers arrested thirty-seven-year old Kevin Minix after a witness suspects him unconscious in his car. Officers say the robber went from mentioning a firearm in the first couple robberies to aiming a gun at someone in the last robberies. In Washington County, Benjamin Schroff robbed a Zion’s Bank taking two hostages and forcing them to drive Schroff while he was shooting the police chasing him. No officer was injured or fatally wounded and pursued the chase. Officers later found Schroff with a shotgun in a shooting position, the deputies then shot him after he refused to put his weapon down. People have the right to own a gun stated in the 2nd Amendment of the Bill of Rights in the Constitution, but what people are using guns for now-a-days is very troubling. People have taken advantage of the use of a gun to their liking, and is causing such a dilemma, whether they need money, or are emotionally driven, or have bloodlust.
Guns have especially been used for one of the most tragic and heart-breaking atrocities throughout America. Families have received so much depression from losing their children in school-shootings. Parents who send off their five-year old child to school to learn how to read and write and expecting their children to tell them how their day at school was, but suddenly get informed their child had been killed by a school shooter. In the horrible school-shooting of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, twenty-year old Adam Lanza had shot his mother and taken four firearms, approached and entered the school and had shot twenty students ages six to seven, four teachers, the principal, and the school psychologist, and two other adults. All dead were shot between three to eleven times. Finally, he killed himself after as police rushed to the school. In Jackson Florida, Shane Schmurth—a teacher fired from Episcopal School of Jackson—entered the school with an AK-47 and killed the Head of School Dale Regan after firing him and then killed himself. People complain, “A gun doesn’t kill a person, a person kills a person.” That statement is correct, but a person uses a gun to kill a person which deems a gun lethal. Firearms go into the hands of people with different mentalities whose minds can create different ideas, ideas that can soon become potential threats.
Guns can give you authority in an immoral method. When people are in need of something and don’t have anything to resort to than begging and pleading, if there eventually was a gun in the situtation, it could give the person more power because of the threat the gun brings into the relationship. The victim is full of fear because his life is at risk and gives the oppressor whatever he needs. The gun has given him this power of attaining anything he wants, and he thinks he can acquire it.
Possessing a gun can give access to your family. If you are away home, and your children are staying at home, and are very young and happen to find a gun stashed in your drawer, they can mistake the gun for a toy. The children could then be playing a game of “Cops and Robbers” and accidentally shoot the sibling. Being in possession of a gun gives the owner a lot of responsibility. One of these responsibilities is placing the firearm in a safe compartment only known to the owner.
Firearms can be in worse hands if the owner was under the influence. When someone is drunk, they are not aware of their actions. So if a person was drunk coming from a bar and start driving their car, there is no doubt that the drunk driver is going to kill someone. If a guy was drunk and had a gun in possession, this person has a larger chance of killing more people than a drunk driver would.
Throughout the United States, young African-American adults have been fired at by the Police. Police Officers are trusted with firearms in order to protect people. In Ferguson, Missouri, eighteen-year old Michael Brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson, were walking down the middle of the street when Darren Wilson—a White Police Officer—arrived and told them to move to the sidewalk, Wilson and Brown soon engaged in an argument and eventually Wilson’s gun had been fired. Brown and Johnson separated in different directions with Wilson following Brown. Wilson fired a total of twelve rounds; Michael Brown had been hit by either seven or eight. Just a little difference to Michael Brown’s story, but Trayvon Martin was a seventeen-year old African-American who went to a convenience store on the night of February 26, he had bought Skittles and an Arizona. He had returned from the store on his way home when George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, had seen him and reported him to the Sanford Police. There soon began an argument between the two, and Martin, who was unarmed, was shot in the chest by Zimmerman. Police Officers have these weapons in case of a threat, these young adults weren’t threats, and yet they shot them anyways. Situations that could have been handled just by talking, unfortunately a firearm had to be raised. The Shootings of young African-American adults has been a controversial subject across the nation. The majority of blacks believing officers like Darren Wilson intentionally killed Michael Brown.
Other countries have banned guns or banned types of guns because of the threat they impose. In China, possession of a gun is restricted by the law. Private citizens are not allowed to own guns. Guns can only be used by the law enforcement. Punishments vary from three years of prison or death. In Cyprus, people are not regulated to buy handguns or rifles, only shotguns. And the bullets are only limited to two rounds. The citizen is not forced to tell the reason he is buying a shotgun, but buying ammunition is mandatory, and every ammunition sale is recorded. South Korea has very restrictive gun law. Using a gun for hunting is permissible, but all firearms must be kept in a police station. Being secure with these guns won’t cause a stir, people have the right to use guns, and must be stored in a safe place; No one will worry about one another, because no one can cause harm this way. The ammunition sales are always recorded, so if any murder is committed, the law enforcement can suspect all the people who bought ammunition that day.
Because of what guns have been mostly used for, they should be banned. A person could kill another person in his right mind because chooses to or through under the influence. People have used firearms to empower other people into giving them what they want, if it’s money, or if they were emotionally driven, or if they hate a person so much they would kill him. Firearms have been used for more crime than they have been for any good cause. And to increase the gap between races even more. People cannot be trusted with the power a gun gives to them, because it ends up corrupting them and using it to their own amusement.

Integration & Application of Knowledge in Civic, Social & Personal Contexts
Essay 1
The courses I excel in are computer technology, medical terminology, biology, chemistry, Spanish, and Arabic. The most beneficial factors are my father's efforts and lessons which motivate me toward success. He always told me: The farmer who tends unremittingly to his crops in his twenties will relish in his earnings in his sixties. He taught me working hard in my youthfulness would reflect upon my life positively as I grow older.
During my summers, my father bought workbooks for all school subjects for my current grade level and the next grade. As a young child, I was completely unappreciative of what my dad was trying to do for me. Strengthening my foundation separated me from the rest of the students in my class, especially in math. And the more I thought of what I wanted to be when I grew up, the more I loved learning about what I didn't know. When I reached high school, I knew I wanted to be a doctor. Biology, chemistry, medical anatomy and terminology would have to be subjects I knew like the back of my hand. I didn't have any time for friends or useless activities. My time couldn't be spent unwisely with students who were going to slack off, so I became selective of people I could call friends. I used my free time in school with my biology teacher discussing what I didn't understand in the biological world. Aspiring to be a doctor, chemistry and biology are crucial. In contrast to biology, chemistry is an applied science, very cohesive and relative to math. The teacher was well-educated and the course was unforgiving for an inattentive student. I take pride in earning an A throughout all quarters.
Learning Spanish started in middle school. As anyone else, I thought learning another language was cool. Overall, I spent three years (consecutive) learning the language. Every year in my middle school, all the Spanish classes would compete in a Spanish Trivia Contest. There were two spanish classes in the school and each student was chosen selectively, according to how much the student could memorize. I spent an entire week memorizing the one-hundred and twenty. I was the first from my class on the team of five. I answered again and again, and won the contest. By my second year of Spanish, I was placed on the team with no question, and claimed victory again. At the end of the year, each teacher was awarding a medal to their best student. I'm very proud of my medal for Spanish.
Growing up as a Muslim child, my parents were strict upon learning Arabic. It's the language of the Quran, and they didn't want me to lose my culture. I attended a private Muslim elementary school before transferring to a predominantly white public school. Learning Arabic and Quran Memorization were classes I excelled in than the other students. When I took first-year Arabic in my sophomore year, I had such an advantage the teacher assigned me to help other students who weren't doing well in the class. My high school didn't continue a third-year Arabic, so I study online when I have the time. Reading and understanding the Quran has become easier.
My father always tells me about life in Somalia before the war. Describing how beautiful his life was, with people he spoke the same language, ate the same food, and especially how it felt to not be the minority. But when the war broke out, he knew there was no where else to go except leave home. He emphasized how it felt to start over. From the time I was six, my dad woke me up before he left for work to tell me School. School. School. From his valuable lessons, my education is my first and only priority.
The life lessons my father has taught me, the best of wishes from my teachers, all my family members, and all their support has made me into the striving student I am today. Their positivity for me has created the everlasting self-motivation I need to succeed, not just academically, but in all aspects of my life. No matter how distant or faint the light (of a goal) is, if I see it, and I undoubtedly believe I can accomplish it, then I have the optimism, the resilience, and the perseverance to achieve it.
